Childhood usually refers to the first two years of life . One researcher has described it as the period of life that begins at birth and ends when the child begins to use language (Bower, 1977). There are important changes in cognitive and physical development at this time.
The importance of social and personality develop in this period around the phenomenon of attachment, the formation of a strong emotional bond between the child and those around him (usually the mother). Social relationships with peers develop later in childhood.
The beginnings of social interaction.
It is commonly believed that children are extremely dependent on adults. But as children depend on adults for many things such as food, shelter and attention, they also show a surprising amount of autonomy and competition. The children find satisfaction in exploring new aspects of their social world. Are attracted to new situations and people.
In fact, some studies have found that young children in an unfamiliar environment, accompanied by their mothers, were more likely to smile rather than to another adult family members, (Eckerman and Whatley, 1975) and play more with unknown peers than with their mothers (Eckerman, Whatley, and Kutz, 1975).
The child, particularly in the second year of life, seems to be highly motivated by the desire to explore , understand and control the world around her and this motivation leads the child to separate from mother . This seemingly innate interest in exploring and acting on its environment is defined grounds of competence. These experiences stimulate the social and cognitive development of children.
At two years, the desire to be self and doing things his way, often leads to a conflict of will between parent and child. This period is considered as the period of the first "crisis". The child develops a concept of himself as distinct from the others, resolutely seeking to assert their independence and to explore the relationship between his intentions and those of others. The frequency of no (say 'no') of the children of two years, has been interpreted as a way for the child to establish his individuality .
